Sunset Over Paradise

Paradise Found
varnished watercolor
13 x 23.5"
To purchase this painting, please contact Madrona Gallery

Sunset Over Paradise is a painting I did with my skies class. It is based on a photograph that one of the students took.  He is an amazing photographer that was kind enough to share his work with me.
The photograph is from one of my favorite places to paint - the west coast of Vancouver Island, near Tofino.

Lost At Sea

Lost At Sea
Watercolor on Clayboard

I've been working more and more with watercolor on clayboard (also called Ampersand Aquabord).
The surface has a beautiful pebbly surface that accepts watercolor quite nicely.
The above painting went off to Madrona Gallery last week along with my painting, Reflection.

Varnished Watercolor

Today is World Watercolor Day. In honor of one of my favorite days of the year, I decided to post my latest watercolor.
I also spent the day painting Christmas cards.
How did you spend the day celebrating this awesome medium?

Mystical Fairies

A couple of years ago I did a series of fairy illustrations that I call my Mystical Fairies.

Some of these fairies are now available as 8x10" prints in my Etsy shop.
These fairies are printed on archival 100% cotton rag paper to look like an original watercolor.

The prints are also available at 20% off by using coupon code CHRISTMAS2012 if you order between now and December 5.
More information can be found by clicking here.
If you are interested in the fairies without the words printed on them, please contact me.

Yellowstone Gold

Yellowstone Gold
Yellowstone National Park
20 x 24"

Since I did my painting of the Grand Prismatic Pool in Yellowstone Park, I have been inspired to paint more of Yellowstone. This painting is of part of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.
I called it Yellowstone Gold because of the golden colors of the canyon and because it is what has made the park famous.

A Capella Reflected

A Capella

The next painting for my class on dynamic water was on how to do reflections.
A Capella is the finished product.
I really enjoyed doing this one and want to do more like it.
I have also been trying to figure out how to teach this course online.
There are a few formats that I am looking into.
I know I have talked about teaching online courses before but the one format I tried didn't seem to work that well for me. Plus I got busy with school, etc, etc.
In the meantime, I have been filming the painting process while I figure it out.
Perhaps I can get something together in the New Year.
If you have tried any online formats that you thought worked really well, I would love to hear about them.
Thank you!

Creating Dynamic Water

The Lagoon

I am currently teaching a course on how to create dynamic water scenes in watercolor.
The Lagoon is the first painting that we did as a class.
The idea was to show how to create simple wave patterns by building up the layers of paint.
Our next painting is on calm reflections.

Sunrise I

I am currently teaching a course on skies.
This past week we did a painting of sunrises/sunsets.
We painted from a photograph that I took of a sunrise on Vancouver Island.
The Island always has incredible sunrises.

Since my students like to see an example of what we paint beforehand, I did a small sample for them.
The above painting is the one that I did in my studio while preparing for class.

Here is the painting that I did as the demonstration to my class:

Sunrise II

I know which one I like better but I am curious to know which one you like better.

Happy Halloween

I'm taking a little break from painting to enjoy spending some time with the kids (and some chocolate)
These are my two wonderful children.
My son is dressed up as Eario, the janitor of the Mushroom Kingdom (Mario Bros)
and my daughter is a character from a show she watches, called Ergo Proxy.
I was excited that my son wanted to be a janitor for the day and was able to convince him to sweep the house.

We tried to dress up our dog, Twilight, as a black widow spider.
She was not too happy about it.
She gave me these sad eyes, wondering what I was doing to her.

Twilight's birthday is today and
yes, she is our Vampire Dog.

The Dance of the Night

While in Cordoba, we were treated to a night of flamenco dancing.
This dance of Andalusia is an inspiration for many artists, including myself.

Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

 Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos
(Castle of Christian Monarchs)
Corodoba, Spain
poured watercolor

While in Spain, I taught my class how to do a poured watercolor. The above image is what we did.
It is of the  Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in Cordoba.
This castle is located along the river near the Mezquita and was built in 1328 by Alfonso XI.
It is the castle where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella resided when Christopher Columbus approached them with the request to fund his journey and subsequently the discovery of America.

Painting In Spain 2012

 The Olive Grove

I just returned from spending 10 fabulous days in the south of Spain teaching a watercolor course.
It was a dream come true with good food, perfect weather, and the most amazing time painting.
We did some plein air painting, some pours, and we even painted with wine.

The resort where we stayed is in Andalusia near Villanueva de Tapia, which is about an hour north of Malaga.
We would spend a couple of days painting at the resort. Then spend a day with our cameras touring the local sites before we would repeat the cycle.
Everything was provided for us by Hilary and Mike Powell of Flavour of Spain.
Hilary arranged the tours and Mike was the chef extraordinaire, making us the most amazing Spanish tapas and meals.
All we had to worry about was what would we paint today.

Grand Prismatic Pool

Grand Prismatic Pool
Yellowstone National Park

I have been wanting to paint scenes from Yellowstone National Park for years.
It has been difficult to do since I live in the Pacific Northwest and teach classes on how to paint the beautiful landscape here. As much as I love this area, I also love Yellowstone. It is not only close to where my family resides but it is where we often holiday. It is such a grand and epic place. It also has a wonderful history with  watercolor. It was Thomas Moran's watercolor sketches and paintings that helped convince congress to make it the first National Park in the world.
This past summer while I was in school, I continued to explore my passion to paint portraits and landscapes.
I gave myself permission to finally paint Yellowstone.

Sego Lily

Sego Lily

I am teaching a workshop on watercolor florals in Vancouver at the Kerrisdale Community Centre on Sept 22-23.
It is called Dynamic Florals in Watercolor.
Sego Lily is will be one of the paintings that I will be demonstrating for this class.
I love white flowers and want to show how to paint one in this workshop.
More information about the workshop can be found here.

The painting is actually on watercolor paper that has been stretched over stretcher bars then is varnished with an acrylic medium.
I will have these watercolor canvases available for purchase at the workshop for $15 if you want to give them a try.  You are welcome to use unstretched paper as well.

A couple of weeks ago I did a poured watercolor demonstration at Opus Art Supplies.
I usually do urban landscapes but have recently wanted to try to do more still lifes with this technique.

Hinterland Fairy

Hinterland Fairy
Digital Photograph

This is another image that I created in my Digital Arts class.
The wings are from one of my illustrations of fairies that I created last year.
Then I added them to a couple of my photographs of a friend's daughter to create this beautiful little snow fairy.

This image can be purchased as a print through Fine Art America.

Red Wine on Linen

One of my assignments in one of my courses this summer was to choose a nontraditional medium and/or substrate and create something with it.
I have been wanting to paint with red wine for awhile so now was my opportunity.
I found some linen napkins and a bottle of shiraz and created the above portrait.

Here is what the full napkin looks like:

It is 15x23.5"
The flower was already stitched on the napkin.

I enjoyed doing it so much, I decided to try just a little painting on watercolor paper
Wine Grapes No. 1

There is definitely more control on the paper.

Glacial Creation

Glacial Creation
Digital Photography

School has finally come to an end for now. It was an intense and wonderful 6 weeks of expanding my creative horizons. One more summer and I will have my Masters of Art Education. Woohoo!
Except I do have to complete my thesis within a year.

For now it is back to real life and reconnecting with all of you.

Glacial Creation is another digital photograph that I did in my digital arts class.
I took the same photograph from Galaxy Soup and change it to a different era.
I even learned how to animate in Photoshop.
Very cool stuff.
Now how can I fit this new knowledge into my current crazy life?

The Piano Lesson

The Piano Lesson

A few weeks ago I taught a portrait workshop. The Piano Lesson is the painting that I demonstrated to the class. I was hoping to get it finished before now but got so excited with the digital studio that I lost myself in there for awhile. This past week I have worked hard at getting my other work done.
However, the digital is not gone for good.
It will return.

"This is no ordinary apple. It's a magic wishing apple. . . Take one bite and all your dreams will come true."
-Queen from Snow White

This is another image I created in my Photoshop class.
Perhaps it is playing to my darker side but I love fairy tales.
And sometimes what we think is a dream come true isn't at all.
On this welcoming table of desserts, I have chosen to represent the poisonous apples in various ways as well as some bitter fruit.
 The guillotine represents impending doom.

Birthday Blast

Yesterday was my 29th birthday all over again.
Okay, it was really the big 40.

The day started out with a surprise in my studio.
The wonderful artists that I am attending school with decorated my desk!
It made me feel loved.
Thank you guys!!
You are the best and I feel lucky to create with you!!

Then I had a Mad Hatters Paint Splattering Ice Cream Sundae Birthday Party.
My awesome friend, Sam Boehner, put it together for me with some help from a few others.
Thank you Sam! for being the bestest friend.

I wore a tiara.
Of course.

It was held on the beautiful grounds of the Coast Collective Gallery.

We had cake and ice cream.
Everyone brought a topping to share.
And only one person brought chocolate sauce.
There was such a wonderful variety of toppings and flavors.

Pin the mustache on the Dali

Paint Splattering!

It was a great way to celebrate my birthday and being an artist.

To all of those that made it out to my party,
thank you for the wonderful gift of time and art!

Digital Art

Digital Photography

One of my courses while at UVic is Photoshop and Digital Art.
I went into the course knowing the basics of the program but the emphasis of the course is to create artistic images.
It has been fantastic!
I am discovering a whole new way to express what I envision.
I might have to change the name of my blog to Leslie Redhead Art.

Back To School

I am back at the University of Victoria for the summer working on my Master's of Art Education.
I've been here a week already and have been going like mad since I arrived.
It is good to be back in the thick of things and seeing the creativity ooze around me.
This is my studio at the school.
It is the perfect spot for me.
Right in the corner next to the water.
Even better than my studio at home!
I don't have to move to fill my water buckets.

I have courses this summer and next then I will be done.

Don Javier

Don Javier
poured watercolor

I did this pour several weeks ago as a demonstration but didn't get around to finishing it until recently.
It is another poured watercolor and is of Ronda, Spain.
I am excited to be returning to Spain so I can take more reference photos!
My workshop is full so if you didn't get a chance to sign up, don't worry. I am sure I will be returning again.

I will be teaching a pouring workshop in Victoria, BC on July 14-15 at the Coast Collective Gallery.
This time I think we will be doing a still life.
For those that are interested in doing a street scene, I will still make that option available.
There is still room left so if you are interested, please contact the Coast Collective Gallery at

Tofino Sunset

I have been back to working in egg tempera lately and absolutely love it!!
There is something transcendental about making your own paint from pure pigment.
Plus the colors are so rich and luminous.
